Introduction

The Hong Kong Bach Choir and Orchestra will present a programme of music comprising Mozart’s immortal Requiem, and a masterpiece in the same genre by acclaimed contemporary Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür, at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall on 2 December 2014 (Tuesday) at 8pm.

Mozart’s Requiem is among the most popular yet elusive works in the entire choral-orchestral repertory. The story of its creation remains a key event in the history of Romanticism: the appearance of a mysterious stranger – who commissioned Mozart to compose a Requiem but to ask no questions regarding its recipient -combined with Mozart’s worsening health, convinced him that the commission was a message from the Underworld, and that he was in fact composing the music for his own funeral. The fact that Mozart died before he could complete the Requiem adds even more intensity to the legend.

Tüür’s 1994 Requiem is a work of remarkable communicative power and expressive force, composed in an eclectic style. Blending the sounds of Gregorian chant with syncopated rhythms, the work hints at Tüür’s background as a rock musician and offers a refreshing contrast to the more familiar work by Mozart. The Hong Kong Bach Choir and Orchestra are pleased to present this work in its Asia première.
