HANDEL’S JUDAS MACCABAEUS BY THE BACH CHOIR & ORCHESTRA
The music of George Frideric Handel is ever-present at Christmastime. But what few people realize is that Handel’s Messiah was actually written for Good Friday, not Christmas.
His Judas Maccabaeus, however, really is appropriate to the season. It recounts the story of the Judean triumph over the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE and the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem, events celebrated in the Jewish wintertime festival of Hanukkah.
The Hong Kong Bach Choir & Orchestra perform Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus, with its famous chorus “See, the conquering hero comes,” on Wednesday, 9th December 2026 at 8:00 pm in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. In his final season as the ensemble’s Music Director, Jerome Hoberman conducts, with soloists Vivian Yau, soprano; Samantha Chong, mezzo-soprano; Stephen Ng, tenor; and Caleb Woo, bass-baritone.

每逢聖誕節，韓德爾的音樂總會隨處可聞。但鮮為人知的是，韓德爾的《彌賽亞》其實是為受難日而非聖誕節而譜寫的。
《猶大•馬加比》則非常適合於聖誕節上演。作品講述公元前二世紀猶太人戰勝塞琉古帝國及收復耶路撒冷聖殿的事件，這些都是猶太人冬季節日「光明節」（Hanukkah）所慶祝的主題。
香港巴赫合唱團及管弦樂團將於2026年12月9日（星期三）晚上8時在香港文化中心音樂廳演出韓德爾的《猶大•馬加比》，作品包含著名的合唱曲〈英雄今日得勝歸〉。是晚音樂會由何博文指揮，適逢是他為該團出任音樂總監的最後一個樂季。獨唱者有女高音邱芷芊、女中音張吟晶、男高音吳智誠及男中低音胡永正。
