Felix Mendelssohn’s “Lobgesang” – his Symphony No. 2 – was commissioned to commemorate Johannes Gutenberg’s epochal invention of movable type.
The Hong Kong Bach Choir & Orchestra celebrate innovation in mass communication with this rarely performed masterpiece, on May 10th (Saturday) at 8:00 pm in Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall.
But technological revolutions have consequences: mass communication has also enabled fanatics to spread misinformation and hatred, leading to persecution.
Recognizing this, the concert also includes music associated with writers driven to their deaths by fascist régimes: Luigi Dallapiccola’s “Piccola musica notturna,” based on poetry by Antonio Machado, and Einojuhani Rautavaara’s “Balada,” setting texts by Federico García Lorca, in its Asian première.
Featured soloists are sopranos Louise Kwong and Rachel Kwok, and tenor Chen Chen. Jerome Hoberman conducts.
