Brothers Genz sing Bach & Mahler
The first of a 4-concert series which features world renowned German singers, Christoph Genz and his brother Stephan Genz, in a programme of Bach, Mahler, and the song cycles by Schubert.
Though it may seem strange to see the High Baroque master Bach and the arch-Romantic Mahler together on a program, it must be recognized that Mahler worshipped Bach, arranged several of his works and, as one of the most prominent conductors of his day, performed him frequently.  Thus, by performing the two in alternation on the same program, we are able to recognize the influences of the meticulous and mathematical Bach on the extravagant but still always fastidious Mahler. One of the most recorded Bach tenors nowadays, Christoph Genz will perform two solo Bach cantatas for tenors, while Gramophone Award winner Stephan Genz will sing Kindertotenlieder in a version arranged for chamber ensemble.  The Bach Chamber Choir will perform the famous Bach motet Komm, Jesu, komm and a Mahler song transcription.
